Deep in the heart of McKinney Falls State Park stands an ancient bald cypress. Old Baldy provides a perfect name for the beloved destination for park lovers who come to enjoy the falls that run through the hilly terrain. Visitors to the park can enjoy lovely vistas, wild creature habitats, nature exhibitions and a talented, helpful and informed staff. Old Baldy was once believed to be a paltry 60 high, however, a recent and more exacting estimation puts it over a 100 feet tall. Park Ranger Amber Conrad took me a fabulous tour of the huge tree. The native Austinite feels a strong connection to the venerable, old tree and is proud to present it to guests of the park. The estimated age, 500 years, does make the tree seem ancient, until you consider the nearby rock formations that reveal over 10 millions years. There is always one more thing to learn and see in McKinney Falls and a visit there to spend some time with Old Baldy and Amber is worth the trip.
