Officials in League City made plans to cut down a towering, historic oak to make room for a widened road. The League City Oak, also known as the Ghirardi Oak after the family that settled the land, has a long, local history. The tree would have met a sad fate if not for monumental efforts of concerned people who wanted to preserve their history and natural wonders. Supporters rallied online and on-site, made news, noise and saved the tree. Thanks to their hard work, the tree is to be relocated 1,500 feet to a water conservation park. It’s a great story, and the city is spending nearly $200,000 to relocate the charmed tree.
